Theatre Lawrence is proud to announce the opening of the musical, Quilters, a touching musical that blends a series of interrelated scenes into a rich mosaic that captures the warmth and beauty, the terror and joy, the harsh challenge and abiding rewards of frontier life.
The story of Quilters centers on Sarah (Susie LeGault), making blocks for a legacy quilt that will reflect her family's history. In illuminated scenes based on song and dance, her daughters help tell the family's stories as a powerful representation of the love, warmth, rich and lively humor and the moving spectacle of simple human dignity and steadfastness in the face of adversity and the ties that bind us together as humans and as families.
In a wonderfully collaborative effort, Theatre Lawrence enlisted the help of talented area quilters to provide and assemble the symbolic quilt blocks that are used to tell the stories throughout the production. The blocks that the audience will see on stage are the work of: Nancy Arnoldy, Linda Ballinger, Marge Banks, Marilou Cavin, Kathe Dougherty, Georgann Eglinski, Cris Johnson, Lydia Picking, Wendy Picking, Kathy Pribbenow, Kim Rodman, Beth Stella, Wendy Turnbull, Karen Warner, and Mary Watson.
The New York Post called Quilters "a show pieced together with love and stitched with pride...a thing of beauty, comfort and joy." According to Newsweek magazine, it is "a tender and moving theatre work, a human patchwork rippling in the breeze of memory." We say, you will not want to miss this play that pays eloquent tribute to the courage and spirit of our nation's pioneer woman.
The cast includes: Susie LeGault, Carrie Groves, Genee Figuieras, Skye Reid, Annie Sauerburger, Kelly Schellman, and Kalen Stockton.
Direction and Choreography for the show are by Widge Yager, Set Design by James Diemer, Lighting Design by Danny Rogovein, Sound Design by Bob Newton, Costume Design by Jane Pennington and Stage Management by Kathi Killman.
An exhibit featuring the work of ten area quilters will also be on display in the Oldfather Lobby including: Linda Ballinger, Mary Boucher, Barbara Brackman, Georgann Eglinski, Sarah Fayman, Linda Frost, Carol Jones, Kathy Pflaum, Deb Rowden, and Kathy Suprenant.
